Höganäs (Sweden)

I was sold this miniature vase recently and told it was made by John Andersson

Hi. It is Höganäs Ceramic made by JA. Höganäs is located in Southern Sweden.

When you say it is Höganäs,do you mean it is from the town of that name or are you refering to a factory/pottery?

Most likely Höganäs Keramik factory.
Andersson was known for his miniature vases.
He is the Andersson in in AJ Höganäs you see stamped on modern Höganäs "stengods".
Your signature looks like the genuine article... the H in Höganäs looks like an "A" and a "J". His miniatures are very sought after.

that's great news,the seller said they were Andersson miniatures but I wasn't sure (I knew they were miniatures)

2 miniature bowls made by Andersson,the left hand bowl measures 1 inch (2.5cm) diameter but the right hand bowl is half an inch bigger

I love the quality of potting on this Carl Harry Stalhane miniature bowl too, it is 47mm in diameter

and was made at Rorstrand

I have looked further into the Höganäs background,it seems that Andersson produced pottery at his own studio plus the Andersson & Johansson company in Höganäs.
I would be interested in any information which would help me discover where exactly my Hoganas miniatures were made

The Höganäs company was founded in 1797 by Erik Ruuth and Carl Bagge. The company's name varied in its early years. It began with Gustav IV Adolf Coke Works, Scanian Coal Board, Höganäs Coke Works .... Themselves pottery production did not start until the 1832. In 1903 Skromberga coal and Lerindustri became part of the company, and the name changed Hoganas Company.

Höganäs
has had several prominent designers associated with it, and some that
must be mentioned, is Edgar Böckman 1915-1926, Ferdinand Call
1856-1859, Ake Holm, c. 1920-1929, Albin Hamberg 1889-1900, Helmer
Osslund 1897, Astrid Liljenberg - Sieruin 1912-1914, Bernt Friberg 1915-1918 and Ottilia Adelborg (which only drew decorations). They together created many of the finest items at the factory.


Hoganas Keramik was founded 1910 by Karl Sigfrid Andersson and Johansson. The
company was not named Höganäs Ceramics from the beginning, but went
under the name "Andersson & Johansson Höganäs Keramik". The Höganäs Ceramic was the name given to everything produced on the site. In 1967 Höganäsbolaget changed it's name to Höganäs AB.

here's a Gunnar Andersson vase made in 1992,it was made in his own studio after learning his trade at the Hoganas factory

A case of the mark being more interesting than the pot!

Not even sure what this is supposed to be. 4 in high with a cup at the top. Seems a bit small for an egg, unless maybe a quail's.

I think the miniatures are for show only and are not meant for use

There was a chap at my local boot sale (Saturday just gone) selling John Anderson Hoganas miniatures. He had around 8 different pieces. I had never seen or handled anything like them before. Perfect little miniatures that were so well made, delightful things. I wanted to buy the lot, but his prices were a bit over the top. I am scouring eBay to try and buy some through there, should the price be right.

£30 for nice ones or £40 for special ones
