Shinsaku Hamada

Shinsaku was born in Tokyo in 1929 and is the second son of Shoji Hamada. He moved with the family to Mashiko the following year and as I write this, in June 2021, he continues to make pots at his father's pottery, alongside his own son, Tomoo.

A yunomi by Shinsaku that is very much in the style of his father but I find that his work has tell tale signs that distinguish it.

The first image, Naomi, although stylistically it is typical of Shinsaku's work the colours are most certainly not. I imagine Tomoo asked him to have a go with his enamels or Koi at the St. Ives Gallery wanted a bit of variety.

His decoration is unmistakable :)

I have only started to buy his work again in the last year. I know it's not earth-shattering but I think it has it's charm and is in the Mingei tradition, more so than that of his father and his son. I sold the bowl above to someone that wanted a typical example of Shinsaku's work and it does have a more modest price tag than that of his father.

Sadly he passed away on the 16th July this year
