I love all his ladies - we've got a few of them in a group. I'm not too keen on his more surreal, still life paintings.

I love his work, lots of cheap prints from the 60s are turning up at antiques fairs lately, I'm waiting for one in perfect condition

If you've got a spare £30,000 burning a hole in your pocket you could bid on this Tretchikoff oil on canvas...

My lovely husband bought me these two Tretchikoff prints for my birthday - they've got surprisingly good quality oak frames on them. They're on my living room walls at the moment.

This is my collection of Tretchikoff prints. (MOD NOTE: Tretchikoff prints are top, middle and bottom left only). Note the deer one at the bottom; not been able to find that on any Tretchikoff websites but the signature is clearly there bottom right. I found that on a car boot sale 75p, picked it up because I like deer and it was ridiculously retro. Then I spotted the signature. Think the lady selling thought I was mad!

Hi there Littleowlski, welcome to the forum. It's the same here, you can almost see it written the seller's faces 'what on EARTH are they buying that rubbish for?' - but as the old adage goes, one man's rubbish is another man's treasure!

By the way, you're aware I'm sure that the print at the top right of your group is 'Tina' by JS Lynch (not Tretchikoff) - I don't recognise the one underneath it however.

Hi, thanks for having me!

The one underneath is 'Nina' by Van der Syde. When I was researching these for my blog, I found a forum for JH Lynch. On there, it seemed to suggest that Van der Syde painted his picture first. The poses, women and names are so similar; surely one must have copied the other! I'll put a larger picture of 'Nina' on after this.

Hiya Emma - we have a thread for JH Lynch so you can put them in there please - you'll probably need to start a new thread for Van der Syde however - am pretty sure we've not got one yet. Obviously this thread is purely for Tretchikoff :-)

MOD NOTE: don't worry I'll split out your Van der Syde into a new thread for you since I see you've already posted it in here.

Here's an interesting article from a couple of years back - just after Tretchikoff died.

It is an interesting question actually in the article - is it perception or talent that makes an artist popular? Everyone's heard of Warhol, but not of the name Tretchikoff, yet the Chinese Lady pictures (and others) are instantly recognisable to hordes of people. Maybe we should start a campaign to increase his popularity! I'll keep working on my little corner of the country...

Me too - it would seem to me that the snobbery that Tretchikoff faced from the art world was fuelled by jealousy - the fact that he courted the masses and succeeded in making them his audience. Let's face it even if you don't like his work, his paintings are well executed - the man had talent. I think the art establishment will only revere painters if they're poor and humble or, as in Warhol's case, eccentric - it's all very silly really.

I'll have to think calmly before I reply to that lots of artists make a good living but dont appear in national collections or in the art history books some have fleeting fame while some last

Here's a photo of Vladimir Tretchikoff in front of some of his paintings - I do like to put a face to a name. The accompanying article about his life is absolutely fascinating!

Tretchikoff 62cm x 65cm print in original Boots frame with label. The woman I bought it from thought I was insane and hubby ranks it alongside my Maurice de Vlaminck print and doesn't want it up anywhere Shock
