Honiton Pottery (Devon) Empty Honiton Pottery (Devon)

Post by tiffo Tue Jul 15, 2008 4:44 am

Honiton Pottery was set up in the early 1900s (1918 I think) by Charles Collard who had previously owned the Crown Dorset pottery in Poole (not Crown Devon). Collard sold the pottery in 1947 but, in general, his wares were decorated with white slipwares, not the heavier brown pieces shown above. Collard sold out to Norman Hull and Harry Barrett who, in turn, sold the company to Dartmouth Pottery in 1997. It's possible that the piece was produced by Hull & Barrett but I have no details of their pots at all. Sorry.

Tiffo this thread is so sad Waaah and neglected that I dug out some bit I bought about 10 years ago when I started collecting. The strong colour in the Honiton Collard range reminded me of early Poole / CSA / Carter etc. I was fascinated with the ashtray as it seems to me to show a link to H.Carter and the popularity of Egyptian design. There is also a cold cream(?) lidded pot and  another piece of Honiton marked Honiton England, not COLLARD HONITON ENGLAND as the other two.

We would appreciate more items Happy

P.S. Potty have you go a base photo for the one above?

Very Clarice like!
The Collard period I believe was the 20s/30s,
Pieces marked, "Honiton england" are earlier.
I'll have to dig a few bits out.

some info on Collard.

The ashtray and the pot have versions of the Stuart pattern. This was named after Vera Stuart, the decorator who specialised in it. There were two versions of the Collard Honiton England mark. This looks to be the larger one used 1935 - 1947, and I think the clay is right for that period too.
The vase is the Jacobean pattern. It looks later; if it is white earthenware then the Honiton England mark was used in 1947 - 1949 briefly when the Collards sold the pottery and Honiton Art Potteries was formed.

Not sure it was ever in. I see a fair amount of it up here near London for some reason. Prices for its age and quality are very very low. The collard stuff (20's/30's) to me it is like a washed out version Poole of the same period. Pale and muted but with the same circus tent designs you see on the Carter Stabler Adams Poole items. It even uses the same red clay and a very similar stamp. Why it is so unloved I have no idea. It could have just slipped through the cracks or a poor period after 1950 could have just turned collectors away. The early stuff is a bargain at todays prices though. Nearly a 100 year old hand painted pottery should not be less expensive than brand new plain white versions from the far east.

This says Honiton on the base but is unlike other Honiton products. It looks like Robin Day to me, what with the bowtie and the glasses and the curly hair. So I have one question .....WHY????

A 20th century vinegar (?) decanter with teak stopper .
Would I be right in saying this was probably part of the range designed by Alan Caiger-Smith when he worked at Honiton in the mid 1970s?
Apparently the range of tableware was sold to restaurant and retail outlets

Honiton Pottery (Devon) Empty Unusual mid century Honiton plate any ideas who designed it?

Post by bluenote Fri Apr 06, 2018 8:57 am

Picked up this, to my mind, out of character Honiton plate and as yet can find nothing similar. Appears to be slipware with a single colour overspun. The fishes eye reminds me of Susan Williams-Ellis Totem design, which was widely "borrowed" Honiton Pottery (Devon) 20180412

from by various potteries, but as far as I'm aware, not Honiton. Its got the round printed backstamp but no decorator/designer initial.Any thoughts please?

Post by Susan Seidel-Hood Wed Nov 02, 2022 12:06 am

Hello folks
I have found this wonderful elephant money bank marked Honiton. I would like to date it. It looks 1930s to me but the only reverse image search l can find is a piggy which is dated 1970s.
Thanks!Honiton Pottery (Devon) Img_2012

Stylistically it does look 1930s but the bung in the base looks to be made of black plastic. If so, then the 1970s would seem correct.
